Wright's journey to Cooperstown has been a rollercoaster, but his impact on the game, especially during his peak years, is now being recognized by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA). In his third year on the ballot, Wright's vote percentage surged from 8.1% to an impressive 14.8%, a testament to his enduring legacy.
While he still has a long way to go to reach the 75% threshold required for induction, Wright's achievements during his healthy years are undeniable. Over a decade, he dominated with a .301/.382/.506 slash line, 222 home runs, and 876 RBI, averaging an impressive 26 home runs and 103 RBI per 162 games. His accolades include seven All-Star appearances, two Gold Gloves, and multiple top-10 finishes in the NL MVP voting.
However, spinal stenosis tragically cut short his career, limiting him to just 77 games after his diagnosis. Despite this, his impact on the Mets and baseball as a whole is undeniable, as evidenced by the retirement of his iconic No. 5 jersey last summer.
Wright's initial Hall of Fame vote, at 6.2%, was a close call, but his support is growing. While a Hall induction would spark intense debate, the conversation about Wright's potential enshrinement is gaining momentum.
